What gets me is CCleaner download link redirects me to filehippo and that's a circus wanting to install other things half the time. And yet CCleaner does have their own download site https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/download/standard I haven't figured this out yet. It's a crap shoot.

I figured it out a couple of years ago. Ditch the regular build that often comes bundled with extras. Turn off auto updates. When a new version is released wait for a week then get the Slim Build (released later than the regular build)

The Slim build usually follows 7-10 days after the "regular" build emerges. In this context, it's appropriate to note that ccsetup542_slim.exe appeared on the Builds page sometime in the last 48 hours. Just installed it myself, in fact!

    Try:
Option 1: Settings->App & Browser Control and turn off smart screen
Option 2: Download Portable CCleaner: CCleaner - Builds . Unzip and run
Option 3: If download CCleaner Installer. Use 7-zip to unzip the content of the Installer. Best method, only CCleaner/CCleaner64 needed, keep lang folder if use other language. Delete the rest, save some space.

Tip: Something I've found on 2 different pc;s (One AMD & One Intel), Windows 10 & CCleaner. Just run the installer, don't save it. For some reason since CCleaner was hacked awhile back & the Meltdown/Spectre CPU bug's were revealed in January Windows 10 doesn't like running the CCleaner installer if you saved it first. Don't save it, just click on Run and install it.

Get it here at this link: https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/download/standard

This started after the CCleaner hack bug and the Meltdown/Spectre CPU bugs where mentioned in January.
Just do a Custom install as CCleaner likes adding stuff you don't want (Chrome, etc.).

I don't think that's specific to CCleaner. Isn't that just the precautionary 'blocked file' status you get on most downloads? Should run fine if you unblock it first.

Has nothing to do with this. The option does not exist for executable, only BAT, REG file type.

    About Smart Screen Filter:

Apparently, CCleaner Installer is not on the list.

Look at my post #14 above. There's 3 options to get CCleaner to work.

I'm sorry @topgundcp, but you mistaken.

and the odd thing is that that file I've just downloaded (with SmartScreen turned on, but not objecting) runs successfully with nothing more than a UAC prompt to click 'Yes' on, despite being marked as Blocked.

I don't need to. I just clicked on it and it ran perfectly well without them.

Here's the 2 screen shots of both ccSetu542p.exe and ccsetup542_slim.exe from the official site. Note that the properties page from both are different from yours since you did not download from their official site but copy from another source.

Apparently. Windows changes the security settings on the file and blacklist it so you'd get different properties page.
However, I was mistaken not to include the .EXE file.
