I understand that you want WMP badly but there are much better players like VLC. WMP is practically discontinued.
WMP may be practically discontinued but then so am I. :)
I'm willing to try other players, and have done in the past, but I always end up with WMP.

The feature that keeps me with WMP is "Auto Playlist". Perhaps I haven't delved far enough into other players to find an equivalent.

Anyway, thank you for your persistence and patience with me. You gave me the will to keep trying things, until the blunt object of rolling back my Windows version.

To tell you frankly, I never liked WMP and always used 3rd party ones. Windows Media Center even less.
I found something here Download Fix WMP - MajorGeeks that may help you with WMP.
Download Windows Media Player Troubleshooters - MajorGeeks
This may also work Download Media Player Classic for Windows - MajorGeeks

@Swifty, I can understand that, I'm still fond of IE :)

I'm agnostic regarding media players, using Films & TV, VLC and WMP in equal measure. Windows Media Player is alive and well after my system was updated to 1803.

    Windows Media Player

    Version 12.0.17134.1

    Operating System

    Version: 10.0.17134 System Locale: en-GB
Service Pack: 0.0 User Locale: en-GB
Build Lab: 17134.rs4_release.180410-1804 Geo ID: United Kingdom

The update alone should not have 'obliterated' it. There may have been an underlying problem before the update was applied that led to this happening. Now you have rolled back to 1709 you have a chance to investigate that and put it right before the update tries to install again.

As a start, I would try going to Windows Features, remove WMP, then put it back again.

I'm just curious and following this thread. I too want to see if I can use WMP in my system. I've followed every suggestion listed in this thread. WMP is showing that I have it and it's installed but I've yet to see/find it to open it.
@Bree....following that link in post #13.....all that is set correctly, yet I still don't have it. Very odd indeed.

I had the same issue as the OP, after the last update. I found out that a plugin called WMP Tag Plus was causing it. After uninstalling it wmp came back. There is a workaround to that. Install wmp plus! 2.10 plugin and then wmp tag plus can work again. Then if you don't need wmp plus! you can uninstall it but the dll needed will remain in the computer and wmp will work fine. Hope this helps.

Note: WMP Tag Plus and WMP Plus! are two different plugins for wmp. Make sure you install version 2.10 of wmp plus! plugin

I have WMP Tag Plus so maybe that was the problem. I'm going away for some time, and whilst I'm away, the 35 day suspension of Windows Update will expire, and I may be back where I started. But I can probably roll back the update (I've forgotten the version number, and can't easily find it). This thread, and especially the prior few posts, will be a great help.
Thank you for all your contributions.
