Version 1803 does not allow me to set defaults by app - MoBEX error

Hi - the recent 1803 update seems to have broken my ability to set default program by app (Settings -> Apps and Features -> Default apps -> Set defaults by app) on a Windows 10 Pro machine.

Selecting this option causes the Set Default by app screen to open briefly, then close.

Yes, it's a bug in 1803 that has been reported by others too. It seems to depend on precisely what apps you have installed. SumatraPDF is one that's commonly found to be the cause. Uninstalling it cures the problem. See...

Windows 10 April 2018 Update now available Monday, April 30 (post #333)

There must be other apps that cause this too, I have the problem on one machine, but it doesn't have SumatraPDF. On another machine with a different mix of installed apps I don't have the problem. Both are on 17134.48, the latest cumulative update.

Hopefully a new cumulative update will fix this soon.

Thanks - I don't have SumatraPDF so no easy fix for me.

This is a known bug and has almost certainly been reported in the Feedback Hub, so Microsoft should be aware and working on a fix. The next regular monthly cumulative update is expected on Tuesday 12 June, so I'd expect the fix then.

It's not unknown for Microsoft to issue an out of band cumulative update any time in the first month after releasing a new version, so it's possible we may get a fix earlier than that.

I have not even gotten that far.

All the things that used to work to set defaults have eluded me. Win 10 either offers only to uninstall (or re-install for some bizarre reason) an existing application or provides only MS applications to choose from.

I have been unable to figure how to get the list of file extensions and apply default applications like I used to. It seems to keep getting harder to avoid MS requiring their applications.

Any thoughts about what I am doing wrong?

Hi, you might try creating a shortcut thus:
    C:\Windows\explorer.exe shell:::{17cd9488-1228-4b2f-88ce-4298e93e0966} -Microsoft.DefaultPrograms\pageDefaultProgram

However as I'm staying on 1709 for a while, I can't tell you if that's still supported in 1803.

No, unfortunately it does not. Takes you to the Settings Default Apps page.

The control panel version was disabled in 1709 in advance of removing it in 1803. One of the more recent cumulative updates for 1709 disabled the classic settings page. Your shortcut still opens the control panel version, but none of the changes you try to make will stick. Try it @dalchina, make a few changes, save them, close the control panel, then open it again - nothing will have changed.

Edit: looking back, seems I had 16299.309 when I first spotted that the 1709 control panel version had been disabled. Classic Default Programs not working anymore

The bug in 1803 is specific to having particular 3rd-part app(s) installed, it doesn't occur in a clean install. One that's known to cause this problem is the...
... non store app SumatraPDF . If it is installed, when I click the "set defaults by app" link in Settings/Apps/Default Apps.... the page fails to load and closes.
I don't have Sumatra, I haven't (yet) found which app is the culprit on one of my 1803 machines that has this bug. But I'm not going to try uninstalling each one until it works. MS are aware of this bug and hopefully will fix it in a CU.

The latest update (2018-06 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4284835)) seems to have fixed it for me.

Unfortunately, I have KB4284835 installed and I am still unable to access the new "Set defaults by app" interface.
