How watch videos backed up to hard drive?

I have videos backed up to my hard drive which I can't play. The .MP4 videos play fine, but the .MPG don't. The .MPG videos are backups of DVDs. They play fine for about 30 seconds and then the picture either freezes or goes black. The sound keeps going like normal though. I tried VLC Media Player, Windows Media Player, and the WIN10 Movies&TV. I'm pretty sure the VLC Media Player worked on my PCs with older versions of Windows. Does anyone know what can play them on WIN10?

VLC has own codecs for most everything, newest version works admirably.

    Hi folks

the absolute IMO 100% easiest way for watching videos or listening to music from HDD is simply to install KODI - it will play things that VLC won't even do at times. Also KODI works on phones, tablets etc too.

If you have an amazon fire TV stick you can install KODI on that and then play video etc on a remote TV even if the TV has no internet access (it will need an HDMI connection though).

No server / streaming software needed on the computer !! so long as the fire stick can access the HDD's.

Incidentally you can install NETFLIX on an amazon fire TV stick so you can watch Netflix also on a "Non smart TV" -- you need a subscription though.

PotPlayer worked like a charm. Thanks!

I take that back about PotPlayer. I just let a video play and after 3 minutes, the picture froze and the sound kept going.

I just tried KODI. It didn't show up on the 'open with'. Widows Defender flagged it as malicious. It didn't even show up on the add/remove programs list. I used the uninstaller that came with Kodi. I hope that removed all of it. Any other ideas?

Try installing the Microsoft MPEG-2 Video Extension, free from the Store...

The MPEG-2 Video Extension enhances Windows 10 to let you play more file types on all your devices – without having to leave your favourite app. If you have MP4 or MKV video files that don’t play, this extension will probably help. Specifically, this extension enables media apps on Windows 10, such as Microsoft Films & TV, to play MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 videos.

DVDs use MPEG-2, so it should help.

    Hi there.

why in the world KODI would show up as malicious just shows the total bovine uselessness of some of these so called A/V products although in general WD is OK. Did you get KODI from its official site.

If there were really a problem with KODI the millions of users world wide would have vented their anger by now !!! --Are you really sure you didn't download from some obscure Russian or Chinese server.

I've had KODI for ages - not a smidgen of any malware etc.

Some of these useless A/V products even flag up Ms EXCEL --of all things as Malware even when installed direct from Ms site or the MSDN server !!!

VLC also works a treat for most things.
