Set default app as OpenOffice Writer - cannot set in Windows 10

When I try to set a default app I have three options in Settings>dafault apps for doc and docx: two are for versions of Microsoft Word and one for the App Store. I have downloaded OpenOffice 4.1.5 and want to use OpenOffice Writer instead of Microsoft Word for all documents with the extensions odt, doc, and docx. But I cannot see how to set the default. OpenOffice is not in the app store and has already been downloaded. In the past I could readily set default apps with the right-click, but I cannot any longer.

Hi, type this into file explorer's address bar or a Run box- you should see the old Control Panel way of setting defaults. That should allow you to set the default for each file type - and so to Open Office.

    C:\Windows\System32\control.exe /name Microsoft.DefaultPrograms /page pageFileAssoc

If Open Office does not register itself as being capable of handling these associations then you won't see an option for it in the Open With dialogue. Similarly, if it did not, then you would not have got a prompt asking you to confirm what you wanted to open one of those file types with if you double clicked them.

Open Office is an installable (exe) program as far as I know- so won't be in the Store.

It looks like OpenOffice 4.1.5 doesn't really understand Windows 10. For example, even though set as the default for documents, this is what shows up:

Set default app as OpenOffice Writer - cannot set in Windows 10-openoffice415_in_win10.jpg

By comparison, LibreOffice has been compatible with Windows 10 since version 5. For example, this shows LibreOffice 6.0.2:

Set default app as OpenOffice Writer - cannot set in Windows 10-libreoffice60_in_win10.jpg

IMO LibreOffice may be a better good choice than OpenOffice because development of OpenOffice has slowed, almost halted, since LibreOffice was forked and most developers jumped ship. (See this article if you want more background info about the split.)

This is particularly important if you need interoperability with MS Office file formats.

If you compare the releases since 2015 it appears OpenOffice is still on version 4.1 and has released just 3 bugfix releases in 3 years whilst LibreOffice has released 2 additional major version increments and dozens of bugfix releases for each version:

There's just no comparison in development and speed of response to bug fixing. For example:
Set default app as OpenOffice Writer - cannot set in Windows 10-libreoffice_tweet.png

    Hope this helps...

The link LibreOffice gets major update with version 5, is now Windows 10 compatible | Computerworld works fine for me. I usually go to Home | LibreOffice - Free Office Suite - Fun Project - Fantastic People for my downloads.

I've just checked all four links I included and all appear fine. Which one didn't open for you and was there a message?

Did you put that in a Run box? (Windows key + R). Also works in file explorer's address bar.

I am using Windows 10 Pro. I am hoping this also works on the Windows 10 Home edition.

To get Microsoft Office documents to open in OpenOffice go to:

    Start> Setting> Apps> Default apps> Set default by app> OpenOffice 4.1.7> Manage

Select the Microsoft Office document type and change it to OpenOffice.
