......I'll miss the fine control from the 'old ways'
    For sure!
One page did it all; choose all your defaults 1, swap a few around in 2. Done!

Thanks to all. I've marked the thread solved since there is a work around which provide shortcuts to restore the old functionality. It's a pity most users won't be aware of this unless they subscribe to an excellent forum like this.

    Never mind, I got it!

Thing is, the Photos App won't display incremental sizes for .ico files!
(That, and the Photo App takes too damn long to load 1 stinkin item!!!)

I've changed this post to unsolved. I just upgraded to v1803 and noticed my shortcuts in Post 2 no longer work.

The method for setting default apps from v1803 is now rubbish. The old Control Panel method was fine since you had precise control over which file types were associated with each program. The new method doesn't even list many important programs e.g. Photoshop so the control you have over file associations is very limited. Is this what MS calls progress? Is there a third party utility I can use to regain control?

Please advise whether you are unable to use the Open With dialogue to browse to your desired program.
    (A screenshot would help!)

If the Open With dialogue doesn't allow you to browse to the program you wish to associate with a given extension, you might try adding it to the Open With dialogue using the Default Programs Editor (free):

    You can also do this:

At a more detailed level - too much so for normal use - there's this:

I did find Photoshop after scrolling to the bottom of all the Open With options. Your recommended utility adds some useful functionality but it's not as good as the previous Control Panel method. Is there a utility which offers the same or better functionality than CP used to offer?

If I knew of one, I'd have posted it. I don't have 1803, and I'm not looking forward to using it.

A little research with Google shows many such complaints, and this is ghacks comment:
How to make any program the default on Windows 10 - gHacks Tech News

Note they too mention the Nirsoft program I posted above, but not the other one.

    Thank you.

In the recent builds of 1709, while the shortcuts still open the control panel version of set defaults by app it has been disabled and cannot make any changes stick. The only thing 1803 changes in this area is that the shortcuts now take you to the settings app version.

the 'right-click - open with' method is now the only available method to set defaults for apps that Settings doesn't list.

Just wondering- if you uninstall a program whose possible associations are not complete, then reinstall it, are you still prompted to choose the association for those extensions when you subsequently double click them?

Hence, in turn, you would be able to associate pertinent extensions (you use) with that program. But how cumbersome.
