    Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
    The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
    Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
    The frumious Bandersnatch!

    Hmm, I definitely feel something useful is being 'bandersnatched' away. At least the shortcuts work in 16299.
    And some useful functionality is lost in the Settings version.

    Yes, but it's in development. We all was used to CP. It's gone. RIP

    No, CP isn't gone yet. Putting Control in the Search box on the Taskbar brings up a list with Control Panel at the top. Of course a lot of the function is on the right-click of the Start button but still have occasion to need the CP for some other things. And for an even longer list of things there's God Mode.

    In new settings "Set defaults by..." If you click on Firefox for .xhtml... you can select new default. But Edge is not available (it is for .html)

    With every new build, less and less options are in CP. Even in God mode are listed only those available. Once moved to settings, option isn't available any more in God mode.

    I use...
    Set defaults by program: C:\Windows\explorer.exe shell:::{17cd9488-1228-4b2f-88ce-4298e93e0966} -Microsoft.DefaultPrograms\pageDefaultProgram
    and this other useful function that's been removed from Control Panel in 1709.
    Set Program Access and Computer Defaults: C:\Windows\explorer.exe shell:::{2559a1f7-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}

    Taken from this other tutorial: CLSID Key (GUID) Shortcuts List for Windows 10

    If you make shortcuts you can even put them in a folder on the Start menu.

    Just to note @Bree, those commands for Default Programs will no longer work starting in Windows 10 FCU version 1709. They will open in Settings instead.

    Really? It works for me in 1709. I specifically set up the shortcuts because these had been removed from Control Panel. The Settings version has no equivalent of the really useful 'choose defaults for this program'.

    That would explain it. Mine's the public release, not an Insider one. I'll miss the fine control from the 'old ways'
