I have just purchased an install disk of Linux 18.3 Cinnamon. I want to install and have windows running somewhere so that I can run PC-DMIS and Autodesk. How do I set that up? I would rather it run in the background where it cant be seen. Also, How much disk space will it use and how much ram is actually needed?
Why would you purchase Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon when you can download it and many other Distros from the site below?:

If you do not know much about Linux use that disk as a Live CD and it will not install, but you can learn how to format your hard drive from the Live CD. Just set your DVD/CD player as the first boot choice in your BIOS and boot from it.

And Burned to a DVD or CD. Using a Live CD, you can install from it but I would just use it as a live CD till you get to learn how it works and the amount of disk space that is required. It will run just like it is installed but not as fast.

Install this as a Virtual Machine --plenty of posts in the virtualisation section on how to do it. (All the software required is FREE as well --no dual booting required - best way for learning !!).

I f you are not comfortable with virtual machines, just boot with the DVD and choose alongside Windows 10. A new window call auto-resize should open.
Depending how much space you need or the size of your drive. Something between 50 to 150 GB is OK. 4G of RAM is good enough.
If you don't see alongside Windows 10, you will have to create a dedicated partition.
Lastly, is your computer in UEFI or Legacy mode? See in system information...
Another option, Linux Live USB Creator (LiLi) from Windows | USB Pen Drive Linux can make a boot USB with persistence of 4 GB which is enough to run a live Linux distro and keep files and settings even after reboot which normal live Linux can't do. Great for experimenting.
Yes, during installation it has to reformat USB but once it's installed you can use remaining space for anything you want. Depending on size of particular distro you may need at least 8 or 16GB drive.
