And you've tried all three extra options at the bottom of settings page: set default by file type, by protocol (this should work) and set default by app - if you can find FF here this should also work. Problem is, that MS removed these from Control panel and put them in settings.
@Callender: this will just direct you to the settings..

Yes - that's the first thing I tried. Still no luck. Firefox won't show. So what I reluctant did was to choose another browser (Waterfox - which is a Firefox variant). So now I have Waterfox as the default program. But would still prefer Firefox. Oh well, must be my PC. But all of this occurred with the last update that occurred last week.

Uninstall ver 57, and install 58. It's on RC3 stage and should be stable. Install 64bit. Also you could install version other than previous, if 58 wont work (if you have 32 bit, install 64 and vice versa..

    Okay so it does

Program I want to set as default will not show up under Default Prog.-settings.jpg

Control Panel then switch view to small icons.

Click Default Programs > Associate a file type with a program.
fFnd file types already associated to whatever your default browser is and change them.

Program I want to set as default will not show up under Default Prog.-set-associations.jpg

If FF does not appear in the list choose "More Apps> Look for an app on this PC" the n browse to firefox.exe

Yes, it shows Firefox when you select the program for HTM and HTML (as you showed on your screen shot above). The issue is that even then it will not show up as the Default for the browser program in Windows 10 - odd, really. It would be nice if under "default apps," you had an option to "look for another app on this PC" as opposed for looking for apps online which means nothing in this case.

Maybe, just maybe the variants to Firefox are messing with Windows and what is displays. I would delete all three Firefox, and I can't remember the other two you have, and then re-install FF and see if it shows as program for default.

As to emails, there is a file type .url in the list. It should be set to Internet Browser, not a browser, just Internet browser. Then mail will follow the browser default, or it should.
