How do I make Video Calls -- Never done it 30 years Windows user !

    Hi there

I know it's almost unbelievable in todays digital age bit I've never sent / received video / voice calls from a compute

Any guides on what to do -- laptop has decent webcam and mike built in and I've got SKYPE installed but instructions are a mess and I'm not sure what's needed at the recipients end

Anybody out there who can take pity on this poor old user and point me to some SIMPLE instructions -- Don't want to use Facebook / Instagram though.

I've built servers and all sorts of hardware etc, repaired cars on the sides of freezing erupting Volcanoes, done some hang gliding and piloted small planes in quite windy conditions - but this simple thing just seems beyond me !!!!!- everybody else seems to do it without batting an eyelid !!!!

    Cheers

Are you talking about desktop or APP version ?
I use only desktop version and it's quite easy to setup.

There you can set up Mic, Camera etc. It's quite usable with only those settings providing drivers are running.

The recipient needs a Skype address. These days this will be a MS account more than likely (I think Skype is dropping Facebook log-in according to the news on this site).

In my experience you better test it - so make 2 MS accounts - put one on your phone and one on your PC.

Send an invite (by searching their directory as @shimshom said above) from one to the other and see what happens.

My biggest recent problem was trying to explain to someone how to unmute their mike. They were using Skype for the first time on an Android phone, I was on PC in another country. I had no idea where they had to press to unmute their mike as I'd never seen Skype on Android so resorted to "call me back" which worked.

If who you are calling has used it before you'll be fine. If neither of you knows what they are doing it is tricky. Like everything I suppose.
