MediaPortal 1.18 crashes with "Direct3D device could not be created"

I've been satisfied with the MediaPortal media center application for years. But very recently (perhaps after the Fall Creators Update), it has stopped working altogether.

It gets to the point where it says it's initializing DirectX. And immediately after that, it crashes with a dialog box containing the error message "Direct3D device could not be created." I have installed the latest NVidia video drivers for my GeForce GTX 750Ti card, but that didn't fix it.

Here's an excerpt from MediaPortal's log. Maybe someone here can figure out what it all means. (Note: I have a Hauppauge Colossus TV tuner card. With MediaPortal failing, I've had to switch to WinTV8, which is Hauppauge's own TV tuner application.)

Looks like you need DirectX9 installing, it got removed here with the Fall Update. Use the Redistributable as the web installer won't work in Win10 Download DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) from Official Microsoft Download Center instructions how to install on that page.
