Skip ahead PC with 18890 offered the nvidia driver hot-fix 439.50 via update. Skip ahead PC is older Intel CPU and GTX1050 GPU.
My other three PC's all on Windows Home 1809 17763.475...

Deleted Software Distribution folder and all contents, restart, check for updates, successful update to 18875. Skip Ahead remains enabled. All seems swell now.

presently, I try to update from inside Defender, it says it has failed, but if I just wait 50-60 seconds, the screen refreshes all by itself to the version number that previously indicated failure....
