This worked for me once servicing a client's computer:
-remove all rams form the slots
-turn on the computer and wait for the BIOS alert beeps (takes 3 to 40 seconds depending on the machine)...

as an additional advice, try to keep the chipset and Video drivers updated.
Run a chkdsk periodically as some HDD may wear out faster than expected lately
Try to research ahead how much power the new hardware will draw from the PS.
There is no need to overspend if you can allow a say
200 to 250 Watts window for any surges or spikes in the demand...
to find out the version that you currently have:
-right click on the start button
-go to "Run"
-type "winver" (no quotemarks) and hit [enter]
