I thought everyone would like to know that the problem with the computer was a bad graphics card. New card was installed and everything seems to be working okay.
I have additional info, but I don't know if it will make any difference.
I had changed the boot order in bios so that the flash drive would boot first, then the CD Rom, and then the hard drive....
Yeah. I've reached the limit of what I can do. Time to take the baby in for repairs. Thanks for all your help.
Okay. This is progress - sort of. I *finally* got something to work - sort of. Thank you for that info on creating a flash drive with Mint. It actually booted and I got to a menu giving me an option...
I can't boot from a CD apparently. Flash drive, yes. CD. No. And I did tell the computer to boot from a CD. Didn't matter. So now I'm going to try creating a flash drive with Ubuntu. Unfortunately...
Okay. I'll try that next. Thank you.
Well, we're home and attempting to fix this computer. I made a boot disk with something called UBCD, which is a linux thing, I believe, and has some diagnostic tools on it. I managed to boot the...
Well, the poor kid has decided to quit trying to repair the computer and find other ways to get midterm work done. Spending all your days going to work, class, and attemps to repair a computer...
Oh. That's a good idea. Try Linux. So we can install Linux to a USB drive. But if we do that, the computer wouldn't restart regardless, would it? I mean since it's running from the USB?
If we...
If the computer isn't recognizing the graphics card, could that be the problem? Is there a way to search for new hardware in windows 10?
To remove a graphics card to test for this issue we're...
I also have no idea if there is a built in GPU. How would we know? That one picture I posted before said the computer is using MS Basic Display adapter. Would that be it?
But the message we got is...
Unfortunately, that didn't work. We disabled auto restart, but the blue screen didn't come up. This is the craziest thing ever.
We also - without connecting to the internet - attempted to install...
So to get that blue screen, we'd have to uncheck automatically restart? Because he doesn't get the blue screen now when the computer restarts.
He is sure that his problem is related to his video...
The computer is a custom built gaming computer. It has not been overclocked. No additional upgrades since it was built. It came with Windows 10, so we don't have a key or anything for Windows 7.

Okay....we just went backwards. The computer was stable for hours while we tried to figure out how to disable auto install of drivers. We found one method because none of the methods in the tutorial,...
We are definitely making progress. The computer has been on for at least an hour - while we've been trying to figure out how to disable the auto install of drivers. None of the options in those...
I think we are making progress. The kid followed all the steps. The computer was fine for 20 minutes - no restarts. So the next step was to connect to the internet and install updates. When the...
Thank you SO much! Hopefully, this will solve the problem. My kid should be able to follow all these steps. I suggested these posts be printed out for easy reference before the whole process begins....
Thank you so much for your reply. I'm not quite sure I follow step 2. We should run ALL of these commands?

select disk 0
clean
exit

Doesn't the first one ask to partition...
I have been working on a problem with my computer for 2 days. (Technically, it's my son's computer.) He was playing a game on Friday night when suddenly the computer shut down and then restarted....
Just so everyone knows. It's been a week and my computer hasn't restarted. It must have been the connections. Hopefully, the problem is solved.
Three days and not a single shut down. It seems like that one wire pulling on the other is the problem. After all, this is what happened before. The computer worked, then shut down with one of those...
I bet that's the problem, then. Computer hasn't shut down in days, while it had been shutting down at least 3 X a day. Same thing happened when I first got it. It was okay, then I got a...
Still no shut down. This is what happened the first time, as I mentioned. I took a couple pictures to illustrate what I was talking about. In the first one, you can see how the wire splits. The...
Nope. Didn't work. I put the USB drive into a back port. Windows loaded up. I removed other USB devices except for the dongle for my wireless keyboard and mouse. Windows loaded up. I can't get the...
