Looking at a W11 Home, i7 12700 machine with 16GB of RAM, 1TB SSD, and 2 SATA SLOTS for $1K. I think that will last us awhile.
Our 14 year old ASUS W10 tower has reached a sort of EOL point. It's not W11 compatible and I don't feel like going through the effort to put W11 on it. It runs OK occasionally and I've decided it...
Did a. full system image restore from mid-December and the issue with ntoskrnl.exe went away. However , the drive still goes to 100% and stays there. It doesn't lock things up, but some tasks can...
Perhaps it's because the smaller drives are being used in more portable devices and are more subject to environments that "impact" them? I have two Toshiba 1 TB USB portable 2.5" drives about a year...
Interesting that Toshiba publishes MTTF numbers for their 3.5" drives (600,000 hrs.), but not their 2.5" drives.
Apologies. The offending process is listed by Task Manager as System. Properties shows it as ntoskrnl.exe. That's what I get for not using my glasses. I capitalized it to highlight it in the posts. ...
Yeah, Norton360 is running all the time and runs a full system scan every Friday night. At one point, I thought it was a hang culprit, but even if it is using 100% of the drive, it will release to...
I posted this issue in a couple of other threads and thought it was fixed. I'll start a new one to focus in on the issue. At various times the C drive (HDD SATA) usage will go to 100% and stay there...
I was uninstalling the Feb. B cycle updates and this update installed itself during the uninstall process. WU was paused until April also.
I had the same thing with the Feb. Patch Tuesday Updates. It wasn't too bad, but noticeable. The real issue I had was the C drive would get driven to 100% and hang there for hours. It would take...
Well the drive hang came back after a couple of days. CHKDSK, SFC, DISM, and Chrystal Disk Info didn't show anything new, so I uninstalled all of the February Patch Tuesday updates. While that was...
Infrared thermometer. Probably don't want to spend the $30+ if you don't have access to one. It's what the medical offices used to check your temperature during Covid. I have had one for years as...
I had an HDD from a W95 computer and purchased a complete USB enclosure with cable ($30) to mount it in. Plugged right into my W10 USB port and was recognized. Been using it as a file backup device...
FWIW, IE continues to run even though I don't ever use it. CCleaner finds IE files multiple times a day when it cleans the drive.
How about using an IR thermometer to see what component temps. are? How about directing a small fan at the open case?
Now that the corrupted files seem to be fixed, I may enable search indexing later and see if it behaves. For now, we'll live with slow system searches since we rarely use the function.
OK, ChrystalDiskInfo identifies one reallocated sector and it has 63,000 hours on it. System seems to be running like normal. It's 14 years old, originally a W7 system and the mother board won't...
No Didn't get to the crystalsiskinfo yet and the drive is a 7,200 rpm ATA HDD. Ran out time last night.
Just a further update on this problem. The problem resurfaced and it looked like Microsoft Windows Search Indexer was tying up the drive. I disabled the process at startup and the issue seemed to get...
Ran CHKDSK and it finished with corrupted files fixed.
Ran SFC and it found and repaired corrupted files.
Booted system and ran SFC and it found no problems.
Ran DISM scanhealth and it detected...
I ended "Microsoft Windows Search Indexer" and the constant 100% active state of the C drive returned to normal activity. Now looking at "COM Surrogate " as it's monopolizing the disk, but not like...
I seem to have an intermittent problem with my system. Since the February Tuesday Patch Update, the system will seem to hang processing keyboard or mouse commands. If you try to execute a second...
And yet IE11 runs every day on my system and we don't use it. But then, Microsoft Edge also runs sometimes and we don't use it either. Every time I run CCleaner after internet usage, it finds files...
Well this turned out to be sort of a perfect storm issue. After much troubleshooting, I finally found the culprit causing the beginning of the HDD hang. A process called "Windows Compatibility...
