    Thanks for the info. I will try the reset. As for the age of the computer I bought it about 3 weeks ago but it was a refurb so the HDD could have been bad but replacing it did not change anything....

    Intel i5 quad core processor 3.2 GHZ
    16G RAM
    1 Tb HDD

    partitioning hard drive

    While I had windows XP I partitioned my hard drive and had ubuntu running side-by-side with windows.
    When I tried that with windows Vista ubuntu wiped out everything and took over the whole drive....
