I typically have the Windows Update service disabled so that i can download/install updates when i want to. However, sometime over the last month or so windows has started automatically re-enabling...
unfortunately, the registry tweak does not seem to have any effect.
I'm maintaining machines running 1511, 1607 and 1703 - in all versions Defender updates definitions with WU disabled - at least that is what is indicated in the GUI
hmm - I've checked Defender many times because I assumed it would not update with WU disabled, but the definitions are always up to date. However, I cannot manually update Defender definitions with...
Not to mention the hours it takes to test for bugs / reset settings / fix the mess left - I'm not happy MS doesn't provide the option for a long term path for "Home / Pro" licenses.

Around the 10th I noticed there was a Windows Defender error - failed definition install or something - so...
On Home you also need to go to the "advanced" page in windows update settings & make sure "notify to schedule restart" is selected. I think if you have it set to automatic (default) then you won't...

It seemed to show up for me after running wushowhide utility
Thanks - I've disabled all with no issues - Alljoyn Router I believe is for connecting other devices to your PC
