I have just installed and tried Virtual box,this has been a dramatic change for me(no idea as to why).
The Vm's respond as i would like.

I currently run player and VMware work station.
These both have huge response/time lag as far as im concerned that is.(and don't perform for me at least)

I had similar issues and finally resolved them by editing the registry from pointing to C: to this.
G:\Users\[My Username]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache
G: being my new user folder...
