I just bought a new HP Spectre x360 with an i7 CPU, 16GB RAM & a 512GB SSD drive.

Turn off "fast startup". See if the issue persists.

Just a thought. Do you have "fast startup" turned on in power options? I had shut down hanging issues before and turning that off solved it.

I did try Thunderbird. Couldn't get it to run in the background. I could only get mail notifications if I opened the app.

I came across Mailbird and it looks like it'll do for my needs. Trying out the demo now and so far it starts up when Windows boots and runs in the background. I'll see how it runs over the next few...
