Lo & behold - when I shut down yesterday, the update re-downloaded automatically and everything works fine now (for the moment)

Went through the update on 2/10/16 and the next time I booted up the desktop had defaulted to the original tiny size icons and ALL my data was gone.. Had to restore the 2/8 update and everything was...
