Most likely a setting you overlooked. Until Win10 I used Ghost for imaging. Never a glitch, and I did a lot of restores.
But Ghost didn't support UEFI, so I tested Aomei , Paragon and a few other...
You need a second drive to hold an image. Could be an external. Use Macrium Free. It's pretty simple to do.

I've been using FreeFileSync for years without an issue. It's a manual process, but straightfoward.
A "reasonable strategy just for the operating system?"

Doesn't apply to me. I image (2 images to different drives) only after restoring my last image and applying updates.
I can only lose the last image - which has never happened after hundreds of...

Sorry for the delay. The command did set the service to manual, with the following error msg:

Thanks RickC. Used this helpful bat file already. Was forced to do a long update today, although I had disabled wuauserv, which seemed to work until now. Can you tell me why you have set UsoSvc...
They Are Billions.
You must use a bare untweaked Windows without any apps installed. I only install Windows and my core apps ONCE.
Tweaking Windows and the apps is usually a couple hour process.
Then takes 5...
1. Anytime I suspect a virus infection (hasn't happened for maybe 2 years.)
2. When I want the latest Windows updates (about every 2-3 months.)

Make sure you buy USB 3.0 - not USB 2. Even if your computer has only USB 2. You'll probably have the drive for a long time.
I use WD Elements with no issues. A 1TB should do, but you might well go bigger if you're willing to pay up.
