Today I took the plunge and loaded Lubuntu onto a clean, formatted drive. The process was easy and didn't take long.
Once it was loaded, I did the basics like making a wireless internet connection...
Great idea! I think there are still some good miles in many of these "senior" machines. Just takes a bit of work to reduce the load on cpu and memory.
Thanks for the idea.
Agreed. Some kid can use it for a while.
I have several up to date "modern" laptops. The reason for the experiment with the Acer was not about upgrading my equipment. It was about learning something. Not an I.T. expert, but I do enjoy...
Thanks RickC,
I found the Porteus XFCE 32-bit iso and downloaded. Once on a usb drive, I gave it a try.
I don't have any clever benchmarks figured out so I just try searches in Firefox to gauge...
Update:
Based on one suggestion, I downloaded Lubuntu and ran it from a usb memory stick. I may have already stated that it was a bit faster than Ubuntu and a lot faster than Windows 10.

Here is a question:
Is it reasonable to expect decent performance from a laptop running Windows 10 with 2 Gig of ram and a 1.6 Ghz processor?
I truly don't know...
Thanks dalchina.
The laptop has 2 gig of ram.
It was a fresh install (formatted drive) completed about three days ago.
HDD is 110 Gig.
The CPU is1.6 Ghz.
I let the laptop settle for about...
Thanks to each of you who replied and made suggestions. I tried turning off Tamper Protection but it didn't seem to help me get permission. I did download Defender Control and gave it a try. It's...
This is my first post, so excuse my lack of experience in this.
My problem is as follows:
Recently did a clean install of Windows 10 on a 32 bit Acer Aspire laptop. No problem with install or...
