Having said that, despite hoping the updates might remedy the problem, it hasn't actually made any difference.

Well, SFC and DISM didn't change anything.

Having said that, tonight is 'Patch Tuesday', so I will wait and see what happens with that, whether that will change anything.

Just tried Windows Update troubleshooter, and restarting PC.

There were some problems reported (I can't remember what) before I restarted, but the problem I was having before still persists.

I just do it out of habit, as I'm very security-conscious, and yes Windows Update should update automatically, although I still end up applying several definition updates a day.

Well, just tried services.msc, and Windows Update is set to Automatic anyway.

I just routinely check to see if there's a new one for Defender anyway, but never had this trouble up until recently....

I need to check to update Defender.

I think something's wrong though, somethings corrupted somewhere (such as registry or something ?). Maybe it needs removing somehow, and re-installing ? Not...

I don't know why with this, but every time I go on Windows Update, it informs me the above update is available, and downloads and tries to install.

This happens every time.
