Thought I make a final post to say the issue has been resolved although I never went back to experimenting. AIMP, or a combination of AIMP and something else was the cause.

Yes, the menu item of AIMP is called AIMP Shellext Unit. And I did make the swith to Foobar.
In a few weeks I will go back to the same AIMP version to be more certain it...
