Fixed!
I had to turn off motherboard video. The absence of a splash screen was the big clue. The computer didn't know which video to use -- the internal video or the video card inserted when the...
in fact it wasn't the router but the switch. changed it and all is well.
thanks to everyone.
maybe. I've never done that. don't want to fry the machine, which works well otherwise.
thanks.
i have updated my computer profile:
this machine is my backup machine and the one i am talking about on this forum

Asus ROG Strix Z490-A Gaming...
The Windows 11 upgrade notice that my hardware is not ready because of absent TPM prompted me to try to boot into the bios (eprom) to reset the security settings.
Simple enough, I thought. But no. ...
yes, that's right.
The Verizon speed test gives me perfect scores "up to" the modem (920/920).
After running diagnostics they are giving me a new router.
I bought some super cables and they...

I am wondering if a z490 Macrium image (in this case from Win 10 system--all current-- and an Asus ROG Maximum XII Formula motherboard) can be used to build a system with a new Z590 Asus motherboard...

after a good night's sleep, after the "fiasco" some thoughts:
resetting the CMOS has helped to some extent : that is, I can now through F8 boot directly to the NVMe. And do so predictably.
...
it is the first choice.
the boot menu F8 gets me there slowly.
Without entering the bios.
this is a consequence of the CMOS reset.
But it is very slow.
Why can't the NVMe boot all by itself as before???
as for Macrium : yes.
You're right about F8, the Boot Override in the Bios.
Choices slimmer now that I reset the CMOS

yes, the Sabrent is the first drive in the boot loader configuration.
i have switched these options around since early this morning. no combination works.
"straight" M2.NVMe or "Windows" M.2.NVMe.
I also reset the cmos.
Fewer boot choices.
No better.
disabled fast boot.
what do i lose by resetting the cmos (and thanks for the instructions)? What do i gain?
I will disable fast boot.
disinclined to create EFI partition on the SSDs.
why can't we create one (or recreat one) on the NVMe?
appreciate more than I can say everyone's input.
this is a killer...
yes it does.

found it.
but it means nothing to me.
it was there is about all i can say.
