Left clicking on the sender just brings up the email into the reading pane. Left clicking again takes it back down. No dialog box appears at any point. Is there a specific view I should be using? ...

I eventually traced the problem to the ad-banner in my Kaspersky antivirus. Disabled that component and it now works fine. Kaspersky are aware of the problem.
