This is even better than a temporary workaround, it completely fixed to problem. I searched forever but I never would have thought about looking for an install...

I used to be able to install fonts (ttf or otf files) by dragging them into the Fonts Appearance panel. Since a couple of weeks this doesn't do anything anymore (as in, nothing happens after dragging...

UPDATE: A third system restore (to about a week ago) fixed the problem. Let's hope it keeps working.
