The Realtek FTP has a bunch of internal development tools to adjust sound levels, compression, phase, etc, so I'd say they definitely mess with sound quality between drivers to make up for lower...

Can confirm 8703 is quite punchy but mids seem a bit recessed. Highs are fine. Will listen to them for longer.

Actually, after some more listening it seems to have pretty nice, sharp highs and decent bass. Decent separation too.

8421 for ASUS and some other OEM's seems to be on the Realtek FTP. Compiled yesterday. Seems to sound a bit worse though.
