So basically I still have this issue, I recently bought a Logitech G430 headset with mic, it has a built in sound driver with USB so I thought that would make a difference, it is a slight difference...
I installed and ran the Intel Driver Update Utility, it came back with a chipset driver update, I installed the update but that didn't fix it
In the mean time I will install the Intel Driver Update Utility you mentioned.
When trying to update the USB driver through the device manager it comes back with this

This is the motherboard I have, I have tried installing the driver listed under 'USB' but it doesn't want to install, it tells me It doesn't recognise the right application and doesn't let me go...
Turned off fast startup, makes no change, also checked and my usb selective suspend setting is disabled by default due to my power plan. I will look into getting the right Azus driver for USB host...

So I tried everything above, even after deleting the USB drivers listed in the device manager (under both sets of audio headings) and rebooting PC, plugging it in, it still automatically...
WOW!!
I just plugged them into my Mac. They work without ANY drivers, just plug and play, all they needed was being selected in the sound panel. So now I know they are not defective, my desktop...
