I'll be darned. That worked! :)
Thank you.
That was one of the ones I tried.
Didn't work for me to restore and it caused file explorer to crash frequently.
I've tried several utilities that purport to save your desktop layout and restore it when something gets messed up.
They all SAVE the layout (or seem to).
The problem I have is that none of...
To summarize, for anyone else researching with a similar problem, at the end the issue seemed to be I needed low-density double-sided RAM and my system wouldn't accept or couldn't correctly use or...
Finally good news. :)
I exchanged the Kingston RAM for G.SKILL Value Series 4GB DDR3 1333MHz Desktop Memory (F3-10600CL9S-4GBNT)

Yes, except mine is an i3 instead of an i5.
I
I'll do that.
They are suggesting G.SKILL Value Series 4GB DDR3 1333MHz Desktop Memory (F3-10600CL9S-4GBNT)
Thanks anyway but that didn't help. I got one long continuous beep of "protest" which I allowed to continue for over 30 seconds and then tried to reboot with the new RAM with the same result.
I...
That's an interesting suggestion. This is my "work" computer but I'll give that a try when I get a chance.
Thanks. I have done that more than once but it didn't help.
I downloaded the Win7 64-bit chipset and installed that. Then rebooted with my old RAM - no erros or problems.
Tried a new 4GB chip in slot 1 with all others empty. This time it got as far as...
Thank you. I'll do that also asap.
Yes it was new.
No just the BIOS. How do I update the Chipset drivers?
Thank you. I will do that as soon as I get a chance and report back with the result.
When I purchased the computer originally, the model in the shop had 4GB RAM with two empty slots and I had the shop add 4 more GB before I took it home. So when I say "original RAM" I mean what I've...
Here are all 4 SPD slots (these screenshots are all with the original RAM):

Here are the screenshots (hmmm... the original RAM was also Kingston - I missed that):

I already have CPU-Z. Rather than screen shots, I'll attach the entire output if I can.
No. I tried but it was difficult to reach and didn't seem to want to come out easily. I didn't want to force it and with the location I was afraind of not being able to get it back in properly.
I did run the Crucial Scanner but I'm not sure how that helps me.
Here's what it says:
RAM & SSD Upgrades | Gateway DX4840 | Crucial.com
...
I don't see any information at all about 1R or 2R on the new sticks.
It just says:
Kingston
KVR13N9S8H/4
CPMK0831764 1.5V
The other sticker says:
This is the second batch of four RAM sticks I'm trying. First four from Patriot, now four from Kingston. I doesn't seem very probable that I'd have two batches of bad RAM in a row.
Okay. No luck so far:
Confirmed memory voltage for the new ram is 1.50 V.
Updated the BIOS.
Cleared CMOS using "Load Defaults" from Setup.
Reinstalled the new RAM - would not boot.
What are the chances I'll make my computer unbootable with a BIOS upgrade?
