Go into "disk management" you should get a message to "initialize drive" do so, and it should format the drive, you should then be able to use the drive as normal

Yes, firefox or ANY MODERN browser will open .pdf files. Most .pdf files are by default not editable (in my experience) You should be fine with firefox.:-)
