I lost patience with Microsoft to fix it, so I extended the recovery partition.

I made all my recovery partitions exactly 1000 MB, and I've had no trouble.
Any size around about that should work. I'd be surprised if the 980 MB recovery partition doesn't already work for you.

It's interesting that even a clean install doesn't create a big enough Recovery Partition and has the same problem.

I think you were meant to type 500 MB at the top. Not 500 GB.
By the way. Microsoft are recommending to extend it by only 250 MB. But I guess it makes no difference, as long as it's large enough.
