Laptop slowing down, and sometimes completely locking up

    Hi,

I'm having a strange issue that could be simple to fix, or could be something much worse.
I bought this laptop a few years ago, installed a SSD, and received random BSOD's once in every 2-3 weeks maybe, so I just put up with it. But the SSD has eventually stopped working to the point where I could barely start up the laptop without it failing. So I whipped out the SSD, and installed the original HDD, which had been kicking around since I bought the laptop. I reinstalled windows and everything seemed OK, but now it has started slowing down sometimes to the point where everything moves in strobe and with huge delay, or sometimes everything I am doing just stops responding, even ctrl alt delete won't work.

My gut instinct is that the HDD is bad, but i'm worried it's the laptop as it's now been through two hard drives.
Please let me know if you need any more information.
(Also I've ran sfc and the hard drive came up with no errors)

    Hope you can help,
    Many Thanks,
    Lucas

I would like to have you run a Clean Boot.

How to perform a Clean Boot.

Warning: Disabling items in Services or Startup may leave your antivirus disabled until the process is ended. For this reason I would suggest that you perform this process off line.

Press the keys to open Run, then type msconfig in the search box. This will open System Configuration.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, you should enter the password or provide confirmation.

    (1) Click/tap on the General tab.

    (2) Click/tap on the Selective startup option.

    (3) Remove the check mark in the Load startup items check box.

    4. Click on the Services tab.

    5. Place a check mark in the Hide all Microsoft services check box, this will remove the Microsoft Services from the list but will still be running.

    6. Click Disable all, this will remove all of the check marks in the Services list.

    7. Click on Apply then OK

Click on Restart in the window that opens.

When the computer is restarted it will boot normally.

If the problem does not continue after the restart please do the following.

    8. Divide the number of these services by two and you place checks in the first half of these, then restart the computer.

    9. If the problem doesn't return in those services remove the checks and place checks in the remaining services and restart the computer.

    10. When you find which half the service is in go on to the next step.

    11. The half which has the service causing this problem remove half of the checks as you did previously to see which half has this service. Restart the computer.

    12. If it isn't in the first half of these services, do the same with the last half of the services.

    13. Once you have narrowed it down to the last three or four services remove the checks one at a time till you find the service at fault.

Once you have found the service post it in your topic. Do not take any action until I suggest the next step.

    Hi,

Thank you for your quick reply Freebooter.

I've been panicking so much about this that I've moved my entire work space into a different room (as the previous one was very very cold (I imagine down to near 5 degrees C, even though the laptop could be functional for 20 minutes, generally when the laptop would crash, I could hear the hard drive making quite a loud knock just before it happens).
I have also switched the two HDD's in my laptop (I can't imagine this would make a difference, but I have always wondered if Asus having the primary drive in the left side instead of the right side was something that was important). I will wait for it to crash again, if it does I will start doing your advice straight away!

Thank you and sorry for not doing your advice first, it's just so crucial for me to have a functional laptop at the moment for University coursework. But I will follow your advice if the crashing continues.

    Many thanks,
    Lucas

    Hi Freebooter,

Sorry i'm back again, now the issue is slightly different. I moved my laptop from my room (which gets absolutely freezing at night time) into the living room (which is cold, but probably 10 degrees + all the time at least).

So my laptop has been running well, the startup time is quite slow (but maybe I'm just comparing it to my laptop with the SSD that I used to have). No glitcheyness, strobe mouse or anything.

But anyway last night I switched the laptop off, and noticed it took a long time to fully power off, thought nothing of it, but then when I went to turn it on this morning it was taking forever on the Asus ROG loading screen. So I impatiently turned it off and tried again a bunch of times. Eventually I grew some patience and left it to do this loading (which I thought wasn't actually doing anything). It went in to a hard drive startup repair (i think?) where it said it was scanning and fixing each partition one at a time (this appeared to only be the E and F partition which is my Data Hard Drive).

Now looking at my Data Hard drive patitions, E and F, they both didn't show any information of how much room is available, and about 5 minutes later E does, but not F still. Also when trying to access information on there it takes a long, long time just to navigate between folders. Also in task manager it says disk 0 (E and F) is running constantly at 100%.

I have absolutely no data on there that I need to keep (it is all a backup of my primary hard drive, so formatting is fine or whatever needs to be done? I have tried the hard drive repair (by leaving the laptop to boot for about 45 minutes each time) but it doesn't seem to be fixing it. Windows is prompting me to reboot again and do that again.

Three things I changed last night before turning off my laptop was:
    1. Disabled fast boot in power options,
    2. Disabled sleep on lid close,
    3. Also windows has been prompting me to install an update, I never let it do it, but I think it did anyway?

    Hope you can help!
    Thanks,
    Lucas

This is a log collector that we use in another forum. Run it on your computer to automatically collect files for troubleshooting.
It will collect: msinfo32, dxdiag, mini dumps, drivers, hosts, install, uninstall, startup, services, event viewer files, etc.
The file will appear on the desktop > zip it and post into the thread.

    Hi zbook,

I've been running the log collector since 00:19, and now it is 00:38.
It's stuck on generating dxdiag report at the moment.
    I will keep waiting.

If you think the hard drive is the problem, it is always an option to remove the second hard drive from my laptop and mount it on an external hard drive caddy if it makes diagnoses easier?

    Many thanks,
    Lucas

Kind of figured out why it was stuck, i already already ran the log collector a couple of weeks ago, and had the folder on my desktop. Moved the old one from the desktop and now it's working better.
It's possibly stuck on Making Services Report now. About 15 minutes on there.

Between 11/16/2017 and 12/14/2017 there were 14 crashes.
One of the crashes had a problem creating a BSOD dump.
There were many problems with the drive reported in the files.

For all tests please post images into the thread.
If there are any problems posting images please use one drive or drop box share links.

    1) open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    2) sfc /scannow
    3) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    4) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread
    5) chkdsk /x /f /r
This may take many hours so plan to run overnight
    6) Find the chkdsk report in the event viewer using the information in this link:
Read Chkdsk Log in Event Viewer in Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials

    7) Run HDTune: http://www.hdtune.com/
    to check the health,
scan for errors, no quick scan but full scan
    run a benchmark.
It may take some time, but please take the time you need to perform it properly.
When above is done please make screenshots of the following
    the health,
    the error scan,
    the benchmark incl. following
    transfer rate,
    access time,
    burst rate,
    cpu usage.
