Thanks for the information, I am in the process of doing the checks that you've suggested.
Could I just ask your opinion on what it could be?
I will briefly explain my theory.
I had SSD and HDD. Let's say in port 1 and 2 on my laptop respectively. My SSD gradually died. I removed SSD from 1 and moved existing data HDD to 1(as even at this point I thought the port could be the problem). Then I installed another newish HDD to port 2 to use as the OS hard drive. Before this I hadn't noticed any problems with the backup data HDD. Now it appears that the problem is with this backup HDD: so could it be the actual port on my laptop is frying/causing problems on the HDDs?
