    70+ processes of svchost.exe

    Hello,

I have 70+ processes on task manager of svchost.exe ... I have never had that many processes of svchost.exe before. I know it could mean a virus so I ran a scan with Sophos Anti-Virus and there are no viruses, only tracking cookies (which I deleted but that didn't effect the svchost processes).

I have also tried running this on cmd admin but I couldn't run this (which is understandable as this is a system process):
    taskkill /im svchost.exe

I have also tried the good old fashioned turn it off and back on again, so I restarted my laptop maybe about 3 times but no effect.

Please could someone advise me if this is normal and if not, what to do?

    Thanks,
    Dan

Have you just had your windows version updated? Did you have the Anniversary Update 1607 before?

Yes. This is normal if you have more than 3.5GB RAM and are running Windows 10 version 1703 or later.

In Windows 10 v1703 systems with more than 3.5 GB of RAM, each service would get its own service host (svchost.exe), instead of running under a shared service process...
...up until Windows 10 v1607, each svchost.exe process used to host a set of services — a model originally designed to reduce resource usage by services...
Why do i have 72 svchost.exe processes in my windows 10?

More on this in the tutorial...

If your PC has 3.5+ GB of memory, you may notice an increased number of processes in Task Manager. While this change may look concerning at first glance, many will be excited to find out the motivation behind this change...

If you look next to the APP's you have open, you see numbers next to them.
    My Cortana has 5 showing.
Under performance tab, CPU has 153 process going.

Device Manager will tell you what each svchost.exe is doing. If you right-click on one of them in the Details tab and select 'Go to service(s)' it will switch to the Services tab with the particular service being run by that svchost highlighted (occasionally it will be a couple of services).

I'm almost sure you have Windows 10 1703 build or 1709, in either case, that is normal, that was changed by design to help improving system stability if a service dies suddenly or crashes.
