You can choose any folder or drive you like. You can also change the drive letter (what I do). Example....

    G:\Program Files (x86)\Origin
    G:\Program Files (x86)\Steam

Note the default folder structure :\Program Files (x86)\Origin, but the drive is G, instead of C. Or you can simply create a folder (Games for example) and tell the games to install there. It's really up to you.

And don't worry about patching, once the game/app knows where it's located, all subsequent patches, DLC, and so on will install in that folder. The one good thing about this is should you need reinstall the OS, the games on the other drive will still be there. You'll still need to reinstall the games or apps, and point to the game's folder (this is for registry purposes), but the games/app won't need to be downloaded again since they're already one that drive.

    Hope this helps.
Thanks very much for the detailed explanation. It worried me the other day when I was speaking to my PC's tech support about something totally unrelated. We ended up discussing the 128GB SSD and 1 Terabyte internal HDD setup on my new Desktop PC. I was telling him that after I do my clean Windows 10 Installation which I intend to do at the weekend + having to leave 20% free space for the OS to use + the 20GB or so that the drive will need to allow Roll Back each time there is a 6 monthly Windows10 Feature Update such as the upcoming 1903 or whatever they decide to call it that it would leave very little space left on the SSD. That's when I told him I planned to keep the SSD drive just for the Windows. I explained that I would install all my games and Applications on the secondary drive D:/. He told me that I would have problems running the Games and Apps that had been installed to my D: drive after every future 6 monthly feature update pushed by Windows Update to my PC because of registry entries etc for the games that would have been written on the C:/ drive. He said the links to games etc would be broken.
He suggested the better option would be to install Windows 10, Games and all Apps to the 1 terabyte HDD and just use the SSD as the secondary drive for data to rule out any future issues. This seemed to me like a total waste of an SSD and the advice surprised me. That's what prompted me to ask for other users feedback on their experiences when Games are installed on a secondary HDD and Windows 10 is installed on the SSD

That storage can be reclaimed either automatically after 10 days, or sooner if you decided to delete the "windows.old" folder yourself through Disk Cleanup. And for the record, and keeping things simple, only do it through Disk Cleanup.

A bad suggestion from someone who really doesn't know what they're talking about. Most people I know, (me included) have been doing this for years without issue. And I'm one who jumps on any major update as soon as release and have never had an issue where apps or games on another drive ceased to work. And I can assure you I'm not the only one. You just happened to get a tech who's not aware. Yeah, anything can happen, but that probability is extremely slim. You're likely to have other issues before that one.

    Relax
