    chkdsk query

was trying to find how to prevent chkdsk from startup -by tweaking in registry.. shouldnt it say autocheck autochk * /r\DosDevice\C ? when i went to the key it only said autocheck autochk * -so it shouldnt run at startup but it still does.

why i want to disable is, last month, it took nearly 10 hours to complete - i was occupied before i could hit "any" key to stop it in time

If it takes 10 hours, you have to investigate underlying reason.

The last disk I checked that took that long did so for a very good reason - I had dropped this external 1TB HDD while it was running and the heads made a loud 'ting' as they hit the platter. It's retrying reads for the bad blocks that takes all that time.

Chkdsk is trying to tell you something. Rather than disabling the checks, you should investigate why this disk is apparently failing.

If chkdsk run its because the disk has its dirty bit set and it wont unset until its ran if you disable it will just find dirty bit set and start it again

The last person I helped with this sort of problem found the disk was failing.

When you have the chance, check its SMART params, run a surface test etc.

Next chance you have, run chkdsk C: /scan in an admin command prompt. Copy and paste what this come out with into this thread.

Great however that is not how you test a hard disk that just tests the memory which is not your problem.

You need to follow the advice given on testing the actual hard drive properly.
