    960 evo nvme speed improvement

I have a new system with a 960 evo nvme. The system bios is legacy. If i change the bios to uefi and change the mbr to gpt, would i gain any significant speed improvement with the nvme drive? Currently i am underwhelmed by the speed of the nvme in comparison to a 850 pro on my older machine.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated

How are you comparing the speeds between NVMe drive and the SATA drive? Are you using a benchmark program or just by using your PC, under normal usage, you will not notice any difference between them but NVMe drive is much faster when you transfer any large files/folders.

Could you provide a screen shot from CrustalDiskMark please from a best of three test runs.

On some motherboards only AHCI mode is supported when an M.2 PCIe SSD device is installed.

Also you should install Samsung Magician and their NVME driver further down that page.

You might also want to see this thread for pointers as well.

I haven't used benchmark programs, I use comparing program boot times with a stop watch

Remember that the 250gb has slower write speeds than say the 1tb version is. But they all have the same read speeds. Check this comparison table.

    Hi,
According to @AddRAM he likes his 850 pro better I'd probably agree seeing the evo is a cheaper product in the 850 line anyway and well the 960 line is there even a pro version yet I have not looked into m.2 drives seeing I like keeping all my os's completely separated especially win-10 and linux from my win-7's
So I prefer one of these to make life and dual booting easier and conventional 2.5 ssd's or 2.5 hdd's for that matter,

I appreciate the information but I'm trying to find out if the 960 evo operates faster ( just in general use) with a uefi bios as compared to a legacy bios. currently the 960 evo system seems to take longer to load programs, assessed by using a stopwatch timing as compared to my 2 year old system with an 850 pro ssd.

    Hi,
The only speed in win-10 is in it's fast start features and that applies to all ssd's and hdd's for that matter which is little more than hibernation on steroids
Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10 Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials
Otherwise best way to compare is to benchmark each separately
But the evo line even in the 850 line was not all that impressive one had to go to the pro series to get a real performance bump.

UEFI and GPT have nothing to do with speed. So no, but I'd still recommend UEFI since you have it anyway.
That said, I use an NVMe drive myself and it's way faster than any other regular SATA SSD I have including a couple EVO 850's in about anything I do on a PC.
Boot times depend on a lot of factors, drivers that need to be loaded, networked machine or not.
Basically a simple machine will boot faster than a more complex one given similar hardware.

    Cheers,
