chkdsk c: \r stalls on reboot

HP HP Pavilion Desktop PC 570-pOXX
    Windows 10 Home (X64) Version 1703 (build 15063.483)
I encountered strange behavior in a couple of programs and thought it might be time for a repair. So I issued chkdsk c: \r which makes an automatic reboot. The reboot went ok and the chkdsk proceeded until 10% complete, whereupon it stalled for an hour before I forced a reboot. Tried and failed twice more then gave up and just ran chkdsk, which reported that it had made repairs. Is there a magic way to succeed with chkdsk c: \r or is this behavior indicative of some more sinister problem?

chckdsk /R checks the HDD for Bad Sectors. It goes thru sector by sector, when it finds a bad sector, it tries to move the file to a good sector near by. The more bad sectors there are on the drive, the longer Check Disk will take. If Check Disk stalls at a point for several hours, that means that you have a lot of bad sectors in that spot of the HDD and it is going to fail soon. You should backup any files you want to keep and replace the HDD ASAP. If you let Check Disk run overnight and finish, it may breathe a little more life into the drive, but you are just delaying the inevitable. Replace the HDD when you can.

Cheeze. This whole computer is just a month old. Hard to believe the hd is bad, but maybe so. Can you suggest a program to verify the disk is shot? I'll follow your suggestion and leave chkdsk running overnight.

TOSHIBA DTOIACAIOO [Hard drive] (1000.2O GB)
I looked at the tacktech page and found Toshiba but darned if I could locate the program for download. . . . OK, found download at https://www.lifewire.com/fujitsu-dia...review-2624559. Tried it; will not respond in Win 10, compatability doesn't help. Get window but cannot select anything.

Ha! Rebooted and the chkdsk started automatically, so I let it run. Zoomed right to 100% and told me nothing wrong with the disk. Problem solved. For now.
