Windows 10: Brand new Win 10 computer runs slow after setup

OK, I will do the items in your last post short of a re-install.

Regarding "- what's missing is which processes are responsible": the 4 screenshots after "clean boot, nothing open, idle 10 minutes" show Task manager Details and Processes under the same setup: clean boot, idle except for Task Manager. I included two of each because CPU usage varies extremely.

It just occurred to me that some back story might be helpful. The computer we have been dealing with here is my wife's new computer. We are replacing her old Win 10 computer because it has slowed down to almost unusable. In April I was using her old computer to set up Roku on our smart tv. In the process Roku customer remote assistance ran a command prompt program on her old computer that they said showed the presence of Alureon trojan. (She uses poor passwords and browsing behavior). Alureon was part of the reason for replacing the old computer. During my original setup on the new computer I started noticing problems as I mentioned in my first post. The problem seemed to improve, and I completed setup without inserting ANY media. Then I moved files from old to new computer. I researched how to safely do so as I did not want to transfer Alureon. I do not recall exactly what I did to transfer files. I am sure I limited the number of files transferred to about 30% of what was on old computer and used only new unused media that had never been in another computer. Sources recommended CD as more secure than flash drive, so I used CDs. I am sure I ran a virus scan on the files to be transferred, I don't recall whether it was in new, old, or both computers. I am sure the problem started before transferring any files, and afterwards it was the same or possibly worse.

windows defender is supposed to be able to remove alureon: TrojanOS/Alureon.A
Run windows defender as full scan.
When it has completed run windows defender in the advance section with offline scan.
It will reboot, load windows defender, and run a quick scan.
Would follow dalchina's suggestion with clean install so that you have a base to start from.

I have 2 restore points, both failed. Msconfig is still stuck on selective.

Hard Disk Sentinel results were "perfect".

chkdsk c: /F failed to run with computer on as "the volumn is in use by another process" even though nothing was open.

sfc /scannow result: "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations".

Unless either of you have a better idea, tomorrow I will run Windows Defender, followed in-place upgrade repair install. If that fails, I will clean install.

Thank you both for your help.

Noting you have the anniversary edition:
I have 2 restore points, both failed.
    80070091?

Well known error- there's a fix. Huge thread on this forum, about the 2nd post I think. Can be found by searching for the error number.

chkdsk c: /F failed to run with computer on as "the volumn is in use by another process" even though nothing was open.
    - that runs after a restart.

    From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
    chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
Read Chkdsk Log in Event Viewer in Windows 10 Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials
    or

    or
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.

Note that to do an in-place upgrade of the anniversary build you will need to use an iso/DVD/USB disk you already have, or download one for that particular build. MS's media creation tool will give you the Creator's build.

    Hi,
I wouldn't expect much from a 1.6Ghz dual core processor.
If you want performance get a quad core in the 2.50+ range next time
All browsers will stall a dual core to a crawl when opening them
Browsers are getting more power hungry not less it is the price for speed

    Dalchina:
I read a few of the posts under the search for 80070091. They seem to be a general discussion of aspects of many ways to repair system restore. I can't tell what to actually do. Can you give me instructions?

That's not true in my experience. I never experienced any freezes nor 100% CPU usage with my dual core laptop with Internet Explorer 11. My former 2.2 GHz quad core laptop is infact slower than my current 2.5 GHz dual core laptop when it comes to web browsing.

    System Restore fails: AppxStaging %ProgramFiles%\WindowsApp 0x80070091 - Page 2 - Windows 10 Forums
    See #13

I've not had to do this myself - although I started that thread, and someone cleverly found a fix, after a few weeks I happened to try S Restore again and then it worked.

If you upgrade to the Creator's build and apply an update, that problem has been fixed as I understand it.

Since my last post I ran Windows Defender full scan successfully and I saw report of no malware found. Then ran Windows Defender Offline (apparently quick scan) successfully, apparently no malware found but I saw no actual report.

    I went to
    System Restore fails: AppxStaging %ProgramFiles%\WindowsApp 0x80070091 - Page 2 - Windows 10 Forums
    See #13:

but I am still confused. I assume I am to follow the instructions in the blue box in the above post. I booted to safe mode and logged in to admin account with admin user name (everything in this entire posting has been on admin account). I got to command prompt by pressing Win + x, and entered:

    attrib "c:\program files\windowsapps" -h

    and received "access denied".

    Then:

    takeown /f "C:\Program Files\WindowsApps" /r /d y

and received "takedown is not recognized...".

If you think it is important to try to fix system restore I am afraid I need idiot proof instructions. As I am probably headed for a reinstall anyway, maybe we should skip this if it will be corrected in the reinstall.

    A shot in the dark:
I was gawping at Event Viewer and noticed an error that is apparently being repeated once every second the entire time the computer is running. Scrolling down reveals hundreds of identical events:Click image for larger version.
