How do I run chkdsk

    If not, something needs fixing. And that screenshot appears to show sthg is wrong.

    And running chkdsk is just routine maintenance.
    And you might just as well check your disk is ok as I suggested.
    Running Hard Disk Sentinel would be informative.
    As I said before I don't see D: anywhere. The PC is running perfectly and I've never run chdsk on any computer I've ever owned.

    Then what is disk 1? It appears to be there... and you said you had some message about needing to scan it.

    If you have a disk in your PC that you can't access, you might as well stop it wasting a bit of power, take it out and use it as a paperweight....

    I'm just wondering- do you also have full backups- or have you just been very lucky and never had a disk fail?

    And as your PC is working perfectly... why start a thread?

    That's a very good question. I started this thread b/c I was getting the message that something was wrong with D: drive and needed to be scanned. I'm wondering the same thing as you. If PC running perfectly why run chkdsk. When you "This Computer" you should see all your drives, correct? On this laptop I see C: and D: (CD drive). I just went to my desktop and it shows C: and E: (also CD drive). I may be wrong on this point but thought that when you ticked the icon you should see all of your drives. Is that correct? Thanks for your response.

    Well, a 4Gb drive is tiny. So what could it be? It says it's removable- so I guess a flash drive. It's FAT32...

    Is it as simple as that? Is there something plugged into a USB port?

    The Disk Management screenshot says Disk 1's name is STORE N GO, so one of these?

    Well, your Disk Management screenshot clearly shows disk 1 as D: 'removable' and called STORE N GO - it has all the hallmarks of a 4GB Verbatim Store 'n' Go USB. Perhaps it's a ghost in the system left over from when one was previously plugged in.

    Try opening Device Manager and on the View menu select 'show hidden devices'. Uninstall any 'Verbatim USB' you find under 'Disk drives'.

    It's not your CD as far as I can see, it appears to be something else in addition to the CD. Your screenshot clearly shows three drives, Disk 0 as C: - Disk 1 as D: removable STORE N GO - and CD ROM 0 as DVD E: (no media).

    Open an elevated command prompt. I presume you want to check this D: drive, as in post #1 you said...
    I went on line and was told to click win key and x, then select command prompt administrator, then type in D f / r / x. Is this correct...
    ...that command was not correct, there's a '/' requires before F and there should be no spaces after each '/'.

    To fix errors it should be...
    Chkdsk D: /F

    To fix errors and check for bad blocks it's...
    Chkdsk D: /F /R

    The optional /X can be added to force the volume to dismount first if necessary.

    If it's removable drive then I have nothing to worry about, right. I have several USB ports and the CD drive which I've already checked and it was OK.
