OK, looking at your startup tab and the performance monitor view you provided, it looks like the Intel delayed launcher was quite active at the time of your screenshot. This is an added security program that allows you into your computer's operating system before any system files can be accessed by virus/malware. It is intended to prevent virus attacks that might load during boot. I have no such option on my Lenovo IdeaPad 110-115ISK. You can try disabling it in task manager startup for a test and then re-enable it if you feel it is necessary.

In fact, you might want to try disabling others things as well. Now, disabling them doesn't mean they won't work if you launch them, they just might startup a bit slower than if you had them enabled.

If you look at my screenshot, I have the Conexant and Smart Audio disabled.

However, I don't see any startup entry for Defender or an Anti-virus program? So what are you using because that cannot be disabled. And why do you have an HP program starting on your Lenovo laptop?

You provided processes with disk activity but you did not provide the disk activity. Take a close look at my screenshot. I think the problem is the disk activity ran off your screenshot so you can take another with just the disk activity showing:

Sort it by write activity before taking a screenshot.

WOT, first, thank you for this help. My wife has called me twice for dinner, there won't be a third.

I have an HP printer attached, so that must be it.

I have McAfee Total Protection installed. I do remember disabling it right after startup to see if that would help but nada.

There are a number of things that have been suggested online like disabling Superfetch and other things, nothing that's worked.

I'll try the things you suggest and reply later.

    Thanks again.

Will try it again a little later.

Ok, I will be offline until tomorrow. Maybe someone else will chime in with some suggestions for you as well.

Hi, in your first screenshot I noticed:

    1. HostAppServiceUpdater using a lot of resources.

The process known as Host App Service Updater belongs to Lenovo App Explorer or Host App Service by Pokki or SweetLabs
As your laptop is Lenovo, I'd guess it's the first. I suggest you disable or remove this for the moment.

    2. IAStorIcon.exe using a lot of disk resources
The genuine IAStorIcon.exe file is a software component of Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (RST) by Intel Corporation.
This Windows service displays a toolbar icon showing an exclamation point if the Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (RST) Service is not running and a green checkmark if it is. Clicking on the icon launches the RST User Interface. These are a valuable interface to the Intel® RST Service even on a laptop that has only one disk drive. Intel® Rapid Storage Technology relies on firmware to implement Matrix RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks). The chief feature of Matrix RAID is allowing multiple sectors on a drive to host different RAID schemes so as to offer more than one balance of accelerated disk access (fastest in RAID 0) with redundancy and failure protection (highest in RAID 10).
Does your laptop actually use a RAID configuration?

Could you please add your disk details to your specs?

    3. McAfee is causing problems- you said at one point you had disabled it. Please do so- and if you wish, disconnect your internet whilst it's disabled.

Then, with your PC nominally idle, please post a screenshot of
    a. Your task manager with Disk organised high to low
    b. As WOT asked, your Resource Monitor including the lower Disk Activity pane.

If there is still significant disk activity, please do a clean boot.
    Then repeat the screenshots.

    Thanks.

Good morning, if it's still morning where you are.

Some good news to report, I disabled Intel Delayed Launcher and Conexant Smart Audio and it dropped the disk usage to 60%...much better! I also stopped the Host App Service Updater and I noticed the disk usage dropped to normal levels much quicker, another good thing. The Host App Updater reloads on startup so how do i deal with that?

Geesh, never thought I'd actually solve this.

Afternoon.. been putting some beans in and tidying the garage.

If it's not a hardware issue (failing disks can lead to apparent high disk usage), it should be possible to identify misbehaving or conflicting software.

Think of it like this. If Safe Mode works ok (basic drivers, usually- but not always- only Windows running), and a normal boot (with everything you and/or the manufacturer has installed does not, start by thinking 'how does one simplify things and reduce what's running when booting normally' to a state where disk activity/CPU use/internet use (or whatever the problem is) is acceptable.

    A process of elimination.

    Something on the Intel software.

    1. Why do you have Intel® Rapid Storage Technology installed?
Does your laptop actually use a RAID configuration?
Could you please add your disk details to your specs?

    2. You should be able to have- and should have- Conexant Smart Audio running if that's what's appropriate for you.

    3. host app service updater: first try to identify it.
Have you installed or ever installed a start menu by Pokki? That's one possibility.

Go to the exe, rt click it, Properties and check Details. That should tell you where it's from.

If it's Lenovo, then the latest version is here:
Lenovo App Explorer for Windows 10 (64-bit) - Desktops and Laptops - Lenovo Support

Decide if you want to keep it - if not, uninstall it.

Lenovo App Explorer helps you find the apps you want to use. It recommends popular, useful and relevant apps so that you can easily personalize your PC based on your preferences or where you are in the world. Traditionally, PCs often came with pre-installed, third-party software that consumers didn’t necessarily want or need. With Lenovo App Explorer, you get to choose the apps you want and secure them safely and securely

The tool is preloaded on some Windows 10 systems and can be accessed directly at lenovoappexplorer.com
When you've resolved the above, with your PC nominally idle, please post a screenshot of
    a. Your task manager with Disk organised high to low
    b. As WOT asked, your Resource Monitor including the lower Disk Activity pane.

Thank you for the process of elimination description dalchina, and again thank you WOT for your help. I did follow the link and read how the Delayed Launcher plays a security roll. I believe now that's there more work to be done on the process of elimination side of things, quite frankly something I was afraid to get into, mostly because I didn't know how to execute the process. I'm going to go ahead and Mark as Solved as I believe I'm on my way to finally putting this issue to rest.

    Thank you!!

Ok, good- just keep asking 'Do I need it?' 'Why is it there?' Not everything a manufacturer adds is useful- trialware... and some things cause problems.
