Restore points question

Is there anyway to save a restore point to an external drive? Every time I do a repair in-place install, I lose all my restore points.

Only if you are using server. Client os do not have that capability.

No. The restore points are stored in the hidden and inaccessible 'System Volume Information' folder on the drive to which they apply. A system image can be saved to an external drive, of course. I prefer to restore a known good image rather than rely on system restore - takes about the same time too, system restore is so slow (if it works System Restore fails: AppxStaging %ProgramFiles%\WindowsApp 0x80070091 )

Interesting, I didn't know that.

Disk mgmt. rt click a disk. select "Properties" and there is the shadow copy tab. Not on client os.




Saving Windows Image to a separate drive results in the creation of shadow storage on that drive, 30% by default.

The first system image copies data containing blocks to a .vhd (x) . When creating subsequent images new /changed data is written to the .vhd(x) file, older data being pushed out of the VHD and into the shadow copy storage.

Selecting an earlier image restores the earlier blocks from the shadow copy.

I did it because some one here told me to do it to fix a problem that I had. It didn't fix my problem, but created others.
