Computer takes forever to fully shut down.

Thanks MeAndMyComputer, I'm tempted to get a repairman in as I've got a lot on my plate at the mo. legal stuff etc. so a quickfix will probably be best. I expect it will be taken away so I will need to fire up my spare and spend time on getting my files updated on it so that is more time to spend! I think it also needs a new onboard battery, according to an HP message.

Would that solve the problem or is it the BIOS?

Hi Simrick, I use HP Support Assistant but it doesn't mention the special recovery flash drive (unless it is included in the download file. I will go onto their site and see what that says.

And removing the battery cable the remaining power % decreases normally but then suddenly goes right down and the laptop shuts down. When I restart it says something about the system battery needs replacing. So since then I have been leaving the mains cable in, so another reason why it needs a techie to change that battery. I can't find the message now even after having written it down!

Keep getting distracted, all I can do right now is respond to thread and do some more fire-fighting!

Just FYI: Having a Macrium backup and Macrium recovery flash drive or Macrium boot menu serves no purpose if the BIOS flash fails. You need the special recovery flash drive that HP offers you to create in their BIOS flashing utility. If your computer (and hence your BIOS) is too old to have this recovery option, then I would consider taking it to a shop to have it done if you are not comfortable flashing your own BIOS - because, if it fails for them, they can recover it manually.

At the same time find out about replacing the battery: Make sure to know about the warranty up-front.

OK, I've bitten the bullet and it is now with a local techie. He will flash the BIOS, source a new battery, replace the cmos battery (which seemed to be failing) so everything crossed he will be able to make my nearly 2 year old laptop well again.

Even he said trawling the HP website for spares is pretty bad but he will make a better job than I could have done, and he says he can get the spares in a day or so!

Thanks for all the assistance, I now have another couple of 'twitchy' days to get through before I get it back again!

Include PSU. cooler, case, peripherals and anything attached to the computer by wired or wireless (mouse, keyboard, headset, printer, xbox, USB wireless network card, etc.)


4) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:

6) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
7) chkdsk /scan
8) wmic recoveros set autoreboot = false
9) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

Thanks Simrick. When I looked at the download it said download and install so rather than set it going and not be able to stop it I ducked out. But now I see what is in the file I understand.

And the techie is going to do it for me, hopefully!
