I've asked someone who knows a lot about data recovery to join thread. He is halfway around the world so it is night time there. Thought it was worth a shot.

The RAW indicator is as though it was wiped, not formatted.

    1. Please unplug all external HDDs and Flash drives from your machine and post a screenshot of Windows Disk Management
    2. Download, install and run MiniTool Partition Wizard Free version 9.1 and post a screenshot of how your drive appears in it. - the very first screen on launching it. Download version 9.1 from here. MiniTool Partition Wizard Free 10.2.2 Download for Windows / Old Versions / FileHorse.com (Do not install any higher version 10.0, 10.1,10.2.1 or 10.2.2. Stick to version 9.1 )

Thanks for the replies, i'll try and get onto this tonight if i have time, of not it'll be Thurs.
do i fire up tht log collector then run stuff and collect the logs after? any idea roughly how long the scans take? if it's a multi-hour thing i'll probably have to wait till the weekend.

Is the one partition failing just one of those mechanical things, or could the whole SSD be one the way out? the other partitions seemed ok, one SSD util i downloaded said it was good, crystal said there were warnings w/ somethings about a pending sector count which i don't understand.
the annoying thing is, i've not been doing much on that puter at all, certainly not written anything to the drive/partition that failed, so i don't know why it's gone belly-up.

    cheers

In post #7, Guru Navy Lt. Commander had suggested MiniTool Power Data Recovery and the OP seal007 had in his post #9 reported "I have recovered data with this Mini Tool " Again in the Fix: chkdsk an unspecified error occurred - Appuals.com suggested by Pro zbook (post #12), MiniTool Power Data Recovery is suggested. So you may try that. What I don't know however is how seal007 managed since the free version can recover only 1GB of data.

Post the screenshots asked for in post #13. We shall then proceed with TestDisk - freeware - and try to recover data with it if possible first. If only the volume boot sector is corrupt, TestDisk can repair it and restore the drive partition. If MFT is corrupt, even TestDisk will not be able to repair it and recover the data and in that case only we need to go in for a commercial software like GetdataBack Simple ($69) and Active @ File recovery ( $29)

Just to make yourself happy, try GetDataback Simple https://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm, scan your drive , select the RAW partition if shown and explore. Does it show all your folders and files? You can even open the files and check the integrity. If the result is positive then we shall go with TestDisk to recover the data. If it fails, then active@ file recovery ($29). If you want you can instead of GetDataback try active@file recovery http://www.file-recovery.com/, since it is the one which you will finally be buying if MFT is corrupted and TestDisk fails to repair it.

If TestDisk finds that both volume boot sector as well as MFT are fine, then running Checkdisk with /f /v /r /x parameters has been found to restore the partition in most cases. Note: This should be done only on that specific condition as reported by TestDisk. ( I wouldn't run it straightaway in any case unless TestDisk confirms VBR and MFT are OK)

Okay, ran the bits and pieces.
Drive manager: chkdsk gives error code - 726173642e637878 25f-drives.jpg

    Minitool:
    chkdsk gives error code - 726173642e637878 25f-mt-drives.jpg
both correctly show the two SSDs i have fitted.

as for the scans zbook asked for:
    health:
    chkdsk gives error code - 726173642e637878 25f-health.jpg
    stats:
    chkdsk gives error code - 726173642e637878 25f-bench.jpg
    and error scan:
    chkdsk gives error code - 726173642e637878 25f-errors.jpg

was expecting a lot more red in that scan but although there's only two blocks, it was apparently the only two needed to cabbage the partition!

    cheers

I personally would just wait until jumanji replied before doing anything else. I know you don't want to make things worse.
He live on the other side of the globe from you, so it could be a while.

yeah, haven't run any repairs or anything. no great hurry. i don't think there's anything vital on that drive to be honest, but i'll like it back working if only to save spending money on a new one.

Haven't gone to sleep yet, was grappling with my wife's iphone 5s problem and I don't know anything about iphone . Her mobile was not ringing and finally I found that the ringer switch on the left was in a silence position. I had to do some research to find out what that switch was, for she couldn't tell me what it is for and got a bigtime shout for that:). I don't know how she is going to manage her Windows 10 HP laptop. Again though I set it up for her when received, I do not know much about Windows 10 except that it is not as easy dealing with it as Windows 7. Learning more about it here .

Back to the topic, I am open to what zbook has to say on the screenshots he had requested. ( OP has a 500GB SDD ??????. I doubt it. It may be a HDD and it had an OS on it earlier. OP to confirm) From what I guess the bad sectors may be in the MFT region corrupting it. ASAP the OP should backup all accessible data on the drive before that SSD shuts shop and SSDs can shut shop at the slightest fault detection unlike HDDs . This should be his first priority before trying any repairs or recovering data from the RAW partition. In fact until he is ready to copy all accessible data in the other partitions he should disconnect and keep the SSD under rest and not running.

Once he confirms that he has done that backup ,we can run TestDisk and check whether we can recover the data in the RAW partition if the OP so desires. If indeed TestDisk finds MFT corrupted and data not recoverable by it only commercial software as already indicated. Minimum cost USD 29 for active@file recovery. So OP has to decide and let me know. My time is always available to assist.
