window 10 'Scanning and Repairing Drive' stuck at 56%

any help to fix this will help.......at present have decided to let it run for the rest of the day to see if it completes; if I switch laptop off. it comes up with a screen to say hit any key to stop it going into scanning and repair mode or clean disc.....but that does not work it redirects back to this......so, at present I just wait.......have not tried going into safe mode because font know what to do when i am in to that to fix problem.....maybe its to do with windows updating.....sometimes to goes into windows defender offline too....

I note there are some youtube videos for win8 on this topic so might look at those at this point
