You might need to change the Windows Update service settings, and then restart the service.
To change or restart the Windows Update service:

You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.

Open Administrative Tools by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type administrative tools, and then click Administrative Tools.

Double-click Services. Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Click the Name column heading to sort the names in reverse order. Find the Windows Update service, right-click it, and then click Properties.

On the General tab, next to Startup type, make sure that Automatic is selected.

Next to Service status, check to see if the service is started. If it is not, click Start. Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    Cannot get updates windows 10

To change or restart the Windows Update service:
    Hello Railtech,
    Thanks for the answer.
Following your instructions I noticed that from the begining, the updat service was dissabled (stopped), so I re-anabled it,
but set the option of update to be manually. Then it started looking for updates for a while, found some and started to download - without asking (set it manually). The download was almost an hour, then it started installing, at this time could not do anything on the computer. Then it started a series of restarting, giving a notice that it might be long.
At one of the restarts I was waiting to see something but nothing happened, the dotted wheel continued to circle, waited for almost half an hour and nothing happened. So I pressed the reset button (no mouse and no keyboard) to restart the machine, got some notice it is trying to get back to the previous (?) windows, waited for a while and display stayed black.
    REstarted again with no results.
So I decided to use my macrium backup image I made two months ago, started the backup, got my system back, had to reinstall some programs again. When finished, made a differential backup, and set the updater to dissabled.
I had enough with my win 7 in the past, which ruined the disk and had to buy this "tailored" computer.
First, I do not understand why the download started automaticly when I set it to manuall, and it did not ask if I agree to install any update.
So it will be without updates, I can live with that.
    Sorry for a long story.
    Thanks for the answer.

Unlike previous versions of Windows you have no choice in Win 10 which updates to install as they all will be installed. As previously advised, set the Windows Update service to Automatic and leave it to get on with it.
