Lol. Yes that’s true! Good to know there’s a work around for installing W11 on older hardware but presumably that will only be for 64 but pc’s. I have loads of 32 bit laptops and netbooks. The little EEE 701sd will only run Linux now but the 10 inch ones run W10 fine. But all 32 bit.

32-bit isn't that bad. My work laptop runs Windows 10 32-bit with 2GB RAM. OK, it is a little slow when I open 10+ tabs in Firefox while running our ERP and Outlook at the same time, but it gets job done.

I have a trick in mind to install Windows 11 on an unsupported system. I'll tell you if successful...

I've already done that but in a W10 / W11 dual boot configuration

Since my main computer is under maintenance, I cannot test my theory now, so I installed Windows 11 on a virtual machine. More about this at elevenforum.com

Ok so now I'm having problems with Windows 10 - on my 11 year old laptop. I did a clean install of 21H1 at the beginning of the month when moving hard drives from one laptop to the other (both identical laptops but one got damaged and this one is hardly used despite being 11 years old).

So as usual after a clean install, everything running fine and zippy. I then had one day where it was incredibly laggy and so slow - so slow it was impossible to get anything done and very time consuming and frustrating. It was a bit of a mystery - I didnt think it was a windows update as I'd set those to pause after clean install and fully updating.

But it turned out it was a very big windows update that somehow downloaded anyway in the background and took a long time - it was installing when I turned off. Took a very long time to install when I turned on again as well. It was the patch tuesday one with the weather widget. I've posted about that elsewhere. After that I continued to have problems with lagging and having to sit and wait for graphics to load slowly. So I uninstalled that update.

However it is still very slow and laggy and driving me a bit bonkers. The worst thing is waiting for words to appear after typing them! Occasionally it will be normal - for about 2 minutes. No viruses or malware, nothing really running in the background - checked task manager. Yet the CPU seems to be at full capacity a lot and occasionally getting too hot.

So I'm beginning to wonder if the latest version is just too feature heavy/up to date for my old laptop. There are no tangible issues in terms of resources running etc. Hardly any processes running in services manager other than essential ones.

It did start after the big update but hasn't improved since. So I'm wondering about going down to 2004. It was running 1909 previously.

At first I thought it was the web browser but all web browsers doing the same and opening any program is stuttery and laggy - even playing solitaire eg. V frustrating. It does make me wonder if something was left after uninstalling that update, or if there is some telemetry running somewhere. For a moment, in task manager something popped up saying very high usage - windows telemetry - clicked on it to see what it was and it disappeared.

Either that or the hardware just can't handle these later versions. Its old yes and an old i5 processor, but 8gb ram and a very fast SSD - never had any issues before. Seems to be graphics driver related possibly too, with the difficulty opening anything graphics related. But checked to see if the driver needs updating and it says it has the latest.

I just had a look to see what updates have been installed since my clean installed. There was KB4023057 on 20th June (which doesn't seem to want to let me uninstall it - when I select uninstall it takes me to control panel and it's not there to uninstall under windows updates in control panel). And KB5003173 (which only shows in control panel) on 25th June. And strangely something in control panel called Feature Update to Windows 10 21H1 via enablement - which says it installed in April! Strange as my clean install of 21H1 was in June.

If I remember correctly, these are the updates that screwed my system and I am now on a clean installation. I suggest you backup your data and clean install v21H1 again. This time use the Windows Update Show/Hide Tool to hide (block) these two updates before installing automatically. Also block any other update (such as drivers) that might screw things.

Cheers. I am thinking of clean installing 20H2. I uninstalled KB5003173 just now and it hasn't made much difference really. 4023507 isnt actually there to uninstall, but shows in WU (maybe it got uninstalled with 5003637 CU). The one that is confusing me is the "Feature update to Windows 21H1 via enablement" (no kb number showing) saying it was installed in April! (Before I installed. So no idea when that appeared. Not sure what would happen if I uninstalled that - would it actually downgrade me to 20H2?! Not doing that before backing up.

But yes I'm going to back up and reinstall. Everything was fine until after 20th June.

Where is the Windows show/hide tool?

Actually seems a lot better now since uninstalling KB5003173 - that's the one that included the widget.
