Let's run Win10 on really really old hardware

As long as you do it on your own computer for your own experience and do not sell it to others, it should be OK. It reminds me of the Mac OS restriction to install only in an Apple Computer. As long as I have purchased the license, I have the right to experiment with installing it in whatever computer I own. Yes, installing it on a third person's computer for profit IS illegal, but I can freely experiment with my own computers.

If Apple would allow installation of Mac OS in all PCs, they could have seen an increase in demand. But then they would not be able to sell their own hardware at these outrageous prices! For the price of the cheaper Mac you can buy a VERY good gamer PC! If you think about it, you won't buy a Mac again! Just compare the hardware.

No hard to guess, you open the relevant system files with a hex editor and change some value. I have no clue which values must be changed and how. You then start Windows in test mode to bypass signature test, otherwise it won't boot.

It is not illegal to share knowledge on how to disassemble or decompile, but I think it's illegal to inform how to do it on specific copyrighted software.
Because otherwise one could also start sharing knowledge on how to assemble bombs which is ofc. illegal activity.

The goal of this thread is to post cases of success installing Windows 10 in old hardware, preferably "vanilla" (without hacking the system files). This means any Intel socket 775 or higher or equivalent AMD. Intel socket 478 requires hacking, so it doesn't count. Here we also give advice of common problems regarding these old PCs and how to find drivers.

Installed Windows 10 Pro v2004 on my Inspiron 1545 from 2009. Still good for daily usage and light tasks.

I have installed v1909 to my Acer Extensa (Intel Txxx dual core, 4GB RAM) and is very good. Haven't upgraded to v2004 yet.

Just finished installing W10 Pro 2004 X64 on a 2007 Dell Latitude D531.
Specs are:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK-57 @ 1.90Ghz
4GB DDR2
120GB SSD
Dell 1505 N Wireless
15.4" 1440X900 WXGA+ Display
ATI Radeon Xpress 1270

It runs really well, for such a old machine. Much of the "performance" is coming from the SSD, as i also installed W10 on the HDD, and it was usable, but only for the most basic tasks. Now firefox loads pretty much instantly, and you can have more then one tab open at a time.
I plan to upgrade the CPU this week for hopefully a even more useful laptop.

Such laptops are ideal for YouTube and Netflix, provided you don't want 4K, only up to HD video. Just connect to a large TV using a VGA to HDMI adapter, if required. You can also play casual games that do not require a very fast graphics card. Ideal for emulators, such as MAME!
