If it has CD/DVD/BD drive, it can be substituted for a HDD/SSD.
No need to put it inside permanently. Why not using an external USB hard disk for your data? You could store some data on the SSD for everyday use and store all non-necessary data (music, photos, videos, downloads) on the USB disk. You could have it in the notebook's case readily available and just connect it when needed.

Ok everyone I'm an 74yo bloke who is very cautious in what I do. I have been running Win 7 Pro 64 bit Sp1 since about Nov 2009. The time has come for me to venture into the world of Win 10m Pro 64bit but before I do I want it goes as hassle free as possible. Before I venture to it I want to ensure the compatibility of my system with the OS. Here is a screen shot of my system details. Please Help me to determine whether my hardware will handle the upgrade. Thank heaps

System is compatible except for possible problems with GPU and it's drivers. Those GPUs HD4xxx and their drivers have gone to legacy long time ago. Last drivers were for W8 but may work in W10 too.

So what you are indicating is that it would be wise for me to upgrade my Graphics Processor Unit.
This being the case could you guide me in the selection of a compatible GPU. Thanks again for your time

Considering the rest of system. some low end PCIe card would do. From AMD, Rx 550 or from Nvidia GT 1030. at most if you consider doing some gaming. Otherwise any cheap PCIe card would do. GT730 for instance.

Ok thank you very much for your help. I understand that the system is getting geriatric from a tech point of view but as my discretionary spending is limited then an upgrade of the GPU will suffice until I can put aside enough to upgrade my whole system. Your input is very much appreciated. Thanks

Than it wouldn't be problem to try W10, in worst case scenario it might just run in compatibility mode with low resolution.
